The Zamfara State government has inaugurated a new technical working group to improve maternal and child health and strengthen healthcare delivery.
A statement signed by Sulaiman Isah, information officer of the ministry said the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, launched the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) Technical Working Group on Wednesday at the State Polio Emergency Operations Center in Gusau.
Maradun said the group will provide technical support, guidance and coordination for the Ministry of Health and other agencies working on RMNCAH programs.
She said the body will serve as the main coordinating and advisory platform for all RMNCAH activities in the state, with a focus on better collaboration, accountability and improved health outcomes.
Maradun outlined priorities for 2026, including upgrading health facilities and equipment, addressing shortages in health workers, ensuring the supply of essential medicines and improving data collection and use.
She added that the state will work to make delivery rooms fully functional under key health initiatives, improve frontline data reporting, increase access to services, promote skilled birth attendance and reduce maternal deaths.
The commissioner also stressed the need for strong coordination, regular performance reviews, knowledge sharing and accountability.She said the government remains committed to transforming the health sector.
In his remarks, Dr. Husaini Yakubu Anka praised Gov. Dauda Lawal for his commitment to improving healthcare, saying recent reforms and innovations reflect proactive leadership.
Also speaking, Dr. Raji Muktar, state coordinator of the World Health Organization, said Zamfara can significantly reduce maternal deaths with sustained collaboration among stakeholders.
The event brought together representatives from government agencies and development partners, including ES HSMB, ZANCHEMA, AFENET, UNICEF, New Incentives, Solina and Sultan Foundation.Officials said the new working group is a key step toward improving maternal and child health services across Zamfara State.
