TRAIN DERAILMENT INCIDENT INVESTIGATION HAS COMMENCED. NSIB

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) says it has commenced an investigation into a railway incident involving a passenger train operating on the Rigasa–Idu corridor.

The incident occurred at about 9:16 a.m. along the Jere–Asham section of the rail line near Asham Station in Kaduna State.

The train, identified as KA2, departed Rigasa Station in Kaduna for Idu Station in Abuja and had earlier arrived at Jere Station at 8:52 a.m. before continuing its journey.

A statement by the NSIB Director Public Affairs and family assistance, Mrs Funke Arowojogbe says Shortly after leaving Jere Station, a rear locomotive that had been attached to support the train reportedly became detached while the train moved along a downward gradient.

The statement notes that the detached locomotive rolled forward and collided with the rear of the train.It says the train was conveying four hundred and twenty-nine passengers, with forty-six crew members and twenty-four security personnel on board.

According to the statement, no fatalities were recorded, though some passengers sustained injuries and received first aid from personnel of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other emergency responders.

It adds that the train later continued its journey and arrived at Idu Station in Abuja at about 10:39 a.m.
