SHADAWANKA CANTONMENT SPARKLES AS WASA 2025 SHOWCASES UNITY, CULTURE AND MILITARY TRADITION

The Shadawanka Cantonment Parade Ground, Bauchi, came alive on Saturday, 24 January 2026, as officers, soldiers and their families gathered for the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA), a colourful celebration of unity, culture and military heritage.

In his remarks, the Special Guest of Honour, Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Sani Usman Mohammed (Rtd), mni, commended the leadership of 33 Artillery Brigade for sustaining the WASA tradition, noting that the event strengthens unity, discipline and peaceful coexistence within the military community.

He also expressed appreciation to the Shadawanka host community for their cooperation and support, which he said have remained critical to the success of military operations and the peaceful coexistence between the cantonment and its environs.

He urged officers and soldiers to remain professional and committed to their constitutional responsibilities in the defence of the nation.Earlier,

in his welcome address, the Commander of 33 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier General UG Simon, speaking on behalf of the officers, soldiers and families of the brigade, described WASA as a long-standing tradition of the former West African Frontier Force that promotes unity, boosts morale, and fosters cultural integration, while also recognizing and rewarding deserving personnel.

He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General W Shaibu, for approving the conduct of WASA across formations, paid tribute to fallen comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation and acknowledged the invaluable support of the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, as well as the strategic guidance of the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and the Commander, Corps of Artillery.

The celebration featured a vibrant programme of performances, including barracks children choreography, cultural displays by Igbo, Bauchi State, Fulani, and Tiv troupes, drama presentations, sporting contests, and the presentation of prizes to outstanding personnel.

A statement signed Lieutenant Oluwakemi Fagbolagun Army Public relations,33 brigade Nigerian army said the ceremony climaxed with a mass band display, the Last Post, Beating of the Retreat and the lighting of the bonfire, marking the symbolic end of the celebration.

Among dignitaries at the event were representatives of the Commander, Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, the Commandant, Armoured School, His Royal Highness the Emir of Bauchi, ably represented by Dr Hayatu Mustapha Barden Nkwudu, heads of other security agencies, members of NAOWA and NASWA, senior officers, warrant officers and members of the Shadawanka Barracks community
