Despite ongoing internal challenges, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently set up a reconciliation committee led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who has since been engaging in talks aimed at resolving the party’s crisis.
The PDP continues to struggle with unresolved tensions involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the G-5 governors, and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Meanwhile, a fresh dispute has emerged over the position of the party’s National Secretary.
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday, Saraki reaffirmed the PDP’s status as Nigeria’s most credible opposition party. He acknowledged that while some members may still defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), he also expects politicians from other parties to join the PDP.
“The PDP remains the only viable opposition party in the country,” Saraki said. “Yes, we’re facing some challenges, but I’ve taken it upon myself to contribute toward resolving them. I’ve seen encouraging responses from colleagues who are also eager to mend the divisions.”
He assured party members nationwide that efforts are ongoing to stabilize the party. “We are doing our best to rescue the PDP, and we are confident that we’ll overcome these challenges. Our commitment to the party’s revival is unwavering,” he added.
