The Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME) and Nigerian Army College of Environmental Science and Technology (NACEST) hosted annual combined West African Social Activities (WASA) 2025 on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
A statement signed by Lieutenant Nkuma Mba Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations NASME/NACEST, Makurdi said the event is designed to Promote cultural heritage, foster Camaraderie and strengthen the bonds among personnel, their families, and host communities, while promoting civil-military cooperation.
Speaking at the event, the Special Guest of Honour, Brigadier General John Atom Kpera (Rtd), traced WASA’s origins to the West African Frontier Force, highlighted its role in easing tensions and showcasing cultural heritage.
“WASA is an annual event designed to bring families of officers and soldiers together, mark the end of the year, and gear up for a new year,” he said.
Brigadier General Kpera (Rtd) emphasized the Nigerian Army’s constitutional role in deepening democracy and maintaining peace, commended families for their patience and support.
He condoled those who lost their beloved ones in the fight against insurgency, stressing the importance of discipline and the Nigerian Army’s vision as a “well-motivated and combat-ready force”.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief host, Commandant NASME, Major General Idongesit Essien Ekpenyong welcomed all guests to NASME Barracks.
He highlighted WASA’s role in showcasing the Nigerian Army’s core values and heritage, saying, “WASA creates a forum for personnel and their families to interact with their Commanders and display our rich cultural heritage.” He thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuiabu, and the Commander Corps of Engineers, Major General ST Shafaru, for their direction and support.
The Chief host noted that WASA provides an avenue to recognize and reward hardworking personnel, encouraging a culture of hard work amongst troops.
The Rector, Nigerian Army College of Environmental Science and Technology, Colonel Olalekan Dimeji Bamiteko , stated that the combined WASA reflected the strong synergy between NASME and NACEST, built on shared values of discipline, training excellence, and operational effectiveness.
He further noted that WASA provides an opportunity to foster camaraderie, strengthen bonds and appreciate the sacrifices of officers, soldiers, and their families, whose support remains central to mission success.
As part of the event, gifts were presented to soldiers who distinguished themselves during the training year 2025, recognising their dedication, hard work, and outstanding performance in the discharge of their duties.
Highlights of the event included cultural performances by various ethnic groups, tug-of-war contests, and other ceremonial displays that showcased the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria.
