The Federal Government has issued a travel and safety advisory to Nigerians residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military actions in the Middle East.
In a statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government said it was closely monitoring the “evolving and volatile situation” involving reported military actions by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, as well as retaliatory strikes by Iran in parts of the Gulf region.
The Ministry urged Nigerians in the affected areas to exercise heightened caution as tensions continue to rise.
“Given the heightened state of tension and the potential for further escalations, the Ministry is issuing this advisory to all Nigerian citizens residing in or currently visiting Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries,” the statement read.
The Ministry advised citizens to maintain constant vigilance and avoid strategic, military, or government installations that could become flashpoints.
“All Nigerians in Iran and affected Gulf countries are advised to remain extremely vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times,” the Spokesperson stated.
It further recommended restricting non-essential travel and avoiding large gatherings or public demonstrations until the security situation stabilises.
Nigerians were also urged to strictly comply with security directives issued by local authorities and cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to ensure personal safety.
The government cautioned against misinformation, advising citizens to rely only on credible international and local news sources, as well as official communication channels.
The Ministry disclosed that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and diplomatic missions in affected Gulf countries — including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia — have been placed on high alert to provide necessary consular assistance.
“The safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government,” the statement assured.
While reaffirming its commitment to protecting Nigerians overseas, the Federal Government also called on parties involved in the conflict to pursue dialogue.
“The Government of Nigeria wishes to call on parties to the conflict to de-escalate the crisis by returning to the negotiation table in the interest of global peace and coexistence,” Mr. Ebienfa stated.
The government said it will continue to assess developments and provide updates as necessary.
