A former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, has resigned from his position as Secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.Makarfi said his resignation was prompted by zoning considerations following the emergence of the party’s new National Chairman from his geopolitical zone.In a resignation letter dated today and addressed to the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, the former governor explained that his decision became necessary after the PDP elected former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, as National Chairman during its 2025 national convention held over the weekend in Ibadan.According to him, both the BoT Secretary and the National Chairman should not come from the same geopolitical zone. With Turaki emerging from the North-West, Makarfi’s home zone, he said stepping aside was the appropriate step to maintain balance within the party’s leadership structure.“You may recall that about two months ago, I had resigned as Secretary of the Board and posted same on the Board’s WhatsApp platform,” Makarfi noted, adding that Senator Wabara had appealed to him to stay on until after the national convention. He stressed that his position had remained unchanged.“The principal reason for my resignation then and now was, and is still, my belief that the National Chairman of the party and the Secretary should not come from the same geopolitical zone. Now that a chairman has emerged from the North-West, where I come from, it is necessary to give him full space to do the needful,” he wrote.Makarfi said the decision was in the interest of fairness and to avoid any perception of imbalance in the PDP’s leadership arrangement. He thanked Senator Wabara and all BoT members for the support and cordial working relationship he enjoyed during his tenure.Makarfi, who governed Kaduna State from 1999 to 2007 and has held multiple leadership roles within the PDP, said his resignation takes immediate effect.Monitor/Adamu
