Kano State has emerged as one of the leading states in Nigeria in the fight against tuberculosis, as activities marking the commemoration of World TB Day 2026 take place.
Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, stated that Kano is among the states taking significant steps to prevent and control the disease.
A statement signed by Nabulusi Abubakar Kofar Na Isa public relations officer ministry of health said the Commissioner highlighted that tuberculosis remains a major public health concern, but noted that the state government is intensifying efforts to curb its spread.
The Commissioner outlined some of the common symptoms of TB, including persistent cough, excessive sweating, and severe weight loss.
He further emphasized that the disease is airborne and spreads easily if not properly managed.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf also explained that the State Government is committed to eradicating TB through various initiatives, including the renovation of Yada Kunya General Hospital to improve treatment and care for patients.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his continued commitment to strengthening the health sector in the state.
As part of the commemoration, authorities reiterated the global campaign message that tuberculosis can be eliminated through sustained efforts and collective action.
Statistics shared during the event revealed that in the past year, 913 people were diagnosed with TB in Kano State, out of which 720 have been successfully treated.
In addition, development partners have launched mobile healthcare vehicles to reach various communities and provide essential medical services, which have been handed over to the State Government.
Health officials encouraged residents to seek medical attention promptly if they experience symptoms, stressing that early detection and treatment are key to stopping the spread of the disease.
