The Kaduna State Government has commenced construction of an Ultra-Modern Inter-State Bus Terminal along the Eastern Bypass in Chikun Local Government Area, marking a major milestone in the state’s transport reform agenda.

A statement from the state ministry of information said Governor Uba Sani, CON, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which is designed to be the largest inter-state bus facility in Nigeria in terms of size and infrastructure.

The terminal, situated on 20 hectares of land, is expected to address long-standing challenges of congestion, disorder, and insecurity associated with inter-state travel in Kaduna State.

The project reflects the state government’s resolve to replace informal transport arrangements with a modern, regulated, and efficient system.

According to the governor, the facility will operate as a dual terminal with capacity for over 5,000 vehicles.

It will be equipped with intelligent traffic management systems, advanced surveillance infrastructure, escalators and elevators to enhance accessibility, and refuelling stations for petrol, diesel, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

A three-star hotel will also be constructed within the complex to provide comfort and convenience for travellers and transport operators.

Its location along the Eastern Bypass is expected to decongest the city centre, improve traffic flow, and strengthen security along major transport corridors.

Governor Uba Sani noted that the project builds on significant progress already recorded by his administration in the transport sector.

He disclosed that since mid-2025, the state has deployed 100 CNG buses to provide affordable and environmentally friendly mass transit. Between July and December 2025, the buses transported over 1.4 million passengers, saving commuters nearly ₦1.5 billion in transport costs.

He added that the government has completed 200 modern bus stops across the state, while the Kakuri Modern Bus Terminal has reached 90 percent completion and the redevelopment of the Sobawa Motor Park is currently at 50 percent completion.

Outlining future plans, the governor announced that the Kaduna Light Rail Project is scheduled to commence by March 2026.

The project will feature a 30-kilometre Red Line from Rigachikun to Sabon Tasha and a 20-kilometre Yellow Line from Millennium City to Rigasa. In addition, a 24-kilometre Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor from Kawo to Sabon Tasha, supported by 30 modern stations and 120 buses, will be introduced to improve urban mobility.

The governor further revealed that Kaduna State’s transport reforms have attracted national recognition.

At the National Urban Mobility Conference held in Abuja on January 22, 2026, the state was ranked second in Nigeria for sustainable urban mobility.

He also noted that Kaduna is the first state in Northern Nigeria and the second nationwide, after Lagos, to adopt a comprehensive State Transport Policy aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

Governor Uba Sani also commended organised labour and transport unions in the state, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), for their support of the government’s inclusive transport initiatives, particularly the Free CNG Mass Transit programme.

The governor said the support and commendation from the unions affirm the practical impact of the initiative in reducing transport costs, saving workers up to 30 percent of their salaries, and improving livelihoods across Kaduna State.
