Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on Friday, August 29, 2025, received the unity torch ahead of the State Sports Festival, scheduled to hold from September 8 to 13, 2025.

While receiving the symbolic torch at Government House, Uyo, Governor Eno described the sports festival as a major avenue for raising sports talents and enhancing the quality of youth development in the State.

The brief event was more than a ceremonial handover, it was the dawn of a new sporting era, one that blends vision, infrastructure, and unity under a Governor who has consistently shown that governance is about the people.

For nearly two decades, Akwa Ibom had gone without a sports festival and the gap in talent discovery was  obvious, but today, the drums are rolling again.

The Governor has not only revived the festival but has tied it directly into aspiration two of the ARISE Agenda which is youth empowerment, talent discovery, and healthy living.

The linkage alone shows the mark of a leader who sees beyond events to enduring legacies.

In his remarks, the Governor described sports as a major avenue for raising sports talents and enhancing the quality of the development of youths in the State.

He further described sports as a multi-billion dollar global industry, stressing that, through it, the State is determined to raise the next generation of super stars like William Troost-Ekong, Lionel Messi, Coco Gauff, and their likes, for the betterment of the State and the country at large.

He reiterated his administration’s drive to realize the vision of a Sports Academy, saying that his administration will continue to invest in discovering sports talents, developing the youth, and transforming the State’s sports sector,

The State Chief Executive used the occasion to challenge youths across the 31 local government areas to see the Unity Torch as a rallying symbol of hope.

This conviction explains why, for the first time in 14 years, his administration approved the purchase of modern sports equipment, to ensure that Akwa Ibom athletes train and compete with world-class tools.

Another decision that defines his administration’s seriousness in sports development is the approval for the establishment of Ibom Sports Academy in Eket. Through setting up the Academy, the Governor is building a factory where raw talents will be refined into global stars.

The theme of this year’s festival, “Nurturing Talents, Promoting Tourism,” captures Governor Eno’s two-pronged strategy which is to use sports to inspire the youth and to position Akwa Ibom as a premium hub for tourism.

With the ARISE Resort, the Nest of Champions stadium, and a hospitality culture second to none, the state will soon be positioned as a sports tourism destination in West Africa.

To his credit, Governor Umo Eno has surrounded himself with the right hands by appointing a seasoned sports administrator, Elder Paul Bassey as Commissioner for Sports and also creating a separate Ministry of Sport in the State.

Governor Umo Eno’s words at the event is a fitting way to end this piece.

“Sports development ties directly into Aspiration Two of the ARISE Agenda, reflecting our administration’s passion for youth empowerment, talent discovery, and healthy living.

“As the Honourable Commissioner for Information rightly noted yesterday, sports is a multi-billion-dollar global industry, and we believe that among our youths are the next Troost Ekong, Lionel Messis, Bukayo Sakas, and Coco Gauffs waiting to be discovered.

“The Festival Logo unveiled today beautifully captures this spirit. It symbolizes unity, strength, and youthful energy. The figures in motion represent agility and teamwork; the colors reflect vitality and cultural pride; while the map of Akwa Ibom at the center signifies identity, ownership, and rootedness in our heritage.

“As we receive the Torch today, let it symbolize our collective strength and unity. Let it drive the can-do spirit of our youths and sportsmen and women to greater heights. Across the 31 Local Government Areas, I say to all competitors, get ready, let the Games
